Incorporating three fluorite and two extra-low dispersion elements, it effectively reduces axial and lateral chromatic aberrations as well as color fringing, ensuring outstanding clarity and color fidelity. The Nano AR coating on internal lens surfaces minimizes reflections, flare, and ghosting. The optical design features a large-diameter XA (Extreme Aspherical) element that suppresses spherical aberrations for enhanced sharpness, while the rounded 11-blade diaphragm enhances the quality of background blur.

Fast Focusing and Reliable OSS

The XD (Extreme Dynamic) Linear Motor System delivers fast and silent autofocus, ideal for tracking rapid subjects during high-speed shooting. This advanced XD motor is enhanced by refined AF algorithms, providing improved responsiveness and reduced noise, perfect for sports and wildlife photography. Power Focus enables smooth focusing transitions during video capture. Full-time DMF allows precise manual focus adjustments via the focus ring regardless of the current AF mode, while Linear Response MF ensures a natural, tactile focus experience for accurate control. Additionally, the focus range limiter and preset focus features optimize focusing speed by restricting or instantly moving to desired focus distances.

The Optical SteadyShot image stabilization system counteracts camera shake to facilitate sharper handheld shots. Combined with a camera body offering in-body stabilization, it provides 5-axis correction for enhanced stability. Three distinct stabilization modes adapt to different shooting scenarios: Mode 1 for standard use, Mode 2 optimized for panning, and Mode 3 focused on maintaining precise framing when capturing fast or unpredictable subjects.

Positioned near the front, the function ring can be configured to control a preset focus point or assigned to power focus and other user-selectable functions via the camera’s menu. The lens includes four customizable focus hold buttons, enabling quick access to features such as Eye AF. A drop-in filter slot at the rear accepts 40.5mm round filters. The rotating tripod collar is equipped with ball bearings for smooth operation and features detents at every 90° for precise positioning, which can be disabled if desired. To reduce weight, the supplied lens hood is constructed from carbon fiber. This lens is compatible with optional FE 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters.
