Incorporating three fluorite elements and one extra-low dispersion element, it effectively reduces axial and lateral chromatic aberrations and color fringing, ensuring outstanding clarity and accurate color reproduction. The Nano AR coating applied to inner lens surfaces minimizes reflections that cause flare and ghosting. Additionally, the G Master optical design reduces spherical aberrations for crisp detail and enhances bokeh quality, complemented by an 11-blade rounded diaphragm.

Fast Focusing and Reliable OSS

The XD (Extreme Dynamic) Linear Motor System enables rapid and silent focusing on fast-moving subjects during high-speed shooting. This high-precision motor is enhanced by updated autofocus algorithms that improve responsiveness and reduce noise, making it ideal for sports and wildlife photography. The lens also features Power Focus for smooth focus transitions in video recording. Full-time DMF allows manual focus adjustment simply by rotating the focusing ring, regardless of the autofocus mode, while Linear Response MF delivers a natural and precise manual focusing experience. Additionally, the focus range limiter switch and preset focus functions optimize focusing speed by restricting the focus range or instantly moving to a predefined focus point.

The Optical SteadyShot image stabilization system counters camera shake to help capture sharp images during handheld shooting. When paired with a camera body that offers in-body image stabilization, it provides enhanced 5-axis stabilization for greater steadiness. The lens offers three distinct stabilization modes tailored to different shooting scenarios: Mode 1 for standard shooting, Mode 2 optimized for panning, and Mode 3 designed to maintain precise framing when tracking fast and unpredictable subjects.

Professional Durability and Intuitive Handling

This lens features weather-sealed construction to guard against dust, dirt, and moisture. Its front element is coated with fluorine to repel dirt and fingerprints, making cleaning simpler. Weighing only 2.9kg, it offers exceptional portability for an f/2.8 super-telephoto. The weight distribution is shifted toward the rear, aligning over a monopod for easier subject tracking and smoother panning. The optical design incorporates fluorite elements to reduce weight, while the external barrel extensively uses magnesium alloy, ensuring a lightweight yet robust build. The function ring located near the front of the lens can be programmed to control a preset focus position or assigned to power focus and other customizable features via the camera’s menu. Four customizable focus hold buttons allow quick activation or adjustment of various functions, including Eye AF. At the rear, a drop-in filter slot accepts 40.5mm round filters. The rotating tripod collar is equipped with ball bearings for smooth rotation and features detents every 90° for precise positioning, which can be disabled if desired. The included lens hood is crafted from carbon fiber to reduce weight. This lens is also compatible with optional FE 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters.
