Pre-Capture & Speed Boost

Building on the advanced sensor technology, the a9 III introduces new capabilities to fully harness the camera’s power. It allows recording images to the buffer when the shutter button is half-pressed, adjustable from 0.05 to 1.0 second. When the shutter is fully pressed, these buffered images are saved to the memory card. While the a9 III boasts a maximum speed of 120 fps, not every shoot demands this. With Speed Boost and the conveniently positioned C5 button near the grip, photographers can quickly toggle between their regular continuous shooting rate and a faster one. Multiple frame rates up to 120 fps are selectable to capture the perfect moment.

Pro-Quality 4K Video

The a9 III leverages global shutter technology to eliminate rolling shutter and banding artifacts, significantly enhancing video quality. It captures the full 6K image area and downsamples it to deliver high-quality UHD 4K video at up to 60 fps, while also enabling 4K recording at up to 120 fps without cropping. Internal recording supports 10-bit 4:2:2 All-I encoding for superior image quality. Additionally, 16-bit raw output is available via the full-size HDMI port to compatible external recorders. Advanced Picture Profiles such as S-Log3 and S-Cinetone further allow precise image optimization to suit your production needs.

Refined Body Design

The latest Alpha-series introduces ergonomic refinements to enhance user operation. The a9 III includes several key updates: a newly added C5 custom button on the front, a continuous shooting mode dial that can be disabled with adjustable shooting speeds via the menu, and an improved grip with a slightly repositioned shutter button for better handling. Dual CFexpress Type A and SD card slots offer flexible media options, enabling use of existing cards or faster CFexpress for optimal performance. A voice memo function includes a microphone positioned near the user for clearer recordings, which can be transferred via FTP and converted to text using Sony's Transfer & Tagging software. IPTC metadata can be automatically embedded in images, with up to 20 customizable presets available. Image bursts are grouped during playback to simplify navigation, especially at the camera’s highest continuous shooting speeds. Built-in Wi-Fi and Ethernet enable rapid networked data transfer during shoots. Designed for diverse environments, the a9 III features weather sealing and a shading curtain that activates when powered off to protect the sensor from dust and other elements.

Future Firmware Updates

The Sony a9 III is designed to improve over time through future firmware updates, which will introduce new capabilities such as continuous shooting at up to 120 fps when using the maximum shutter speed of 1/80,000 second. Enhancements to IPTC metadata handling and FTP functions are also planned, alongside the integration of C2PA technology from the Content Authenticity Initiative to support content verification.
