The latest lens artillery from Canon: All you need to know about the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM

The successor to the wildly popular EF 50mm f/1.8 II has ceremoniously arrived in style, introducing the latest addition to the EOS prime lens family, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens. This light weight and compact EF 50mm f/1.8 STM standard lens features a large maximum aperture of f/1.8, an effective focal length of 80mm (If attached to an EOS camera with an APS-C sensor).

Get enhanced image quality with the Canon’s Super Spectra Coating, which minimises internal reflections, as well as ghosting and flare. Another improvement on its predecessor and welcomed addition is the use of a metal mount, providing additional stability and ruggedness. Making it a useful every day standard lens too.

Get creative with portraits that pop

The EF 50mm f/1.8 STM really comes to life when used for portraiture or low-light photography. It will help you capture stunning head or shoulder composition.

The f/1.38 maximum aperture provides control and gives you creative freedom. Focus on a subject and allow the rest to blend into a smooth blur, making your subject instantly grab the viewers’ attention.

The lens also provides a minimum focusing distance of 0.35mm, allowing you to get even closer with greater magnification.

The ideal fit

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is seen as the ideal second lens for entry-level and advanced amateur photographers looking to take their work to the next level as well as those who are also interested in capturing video.

Canon USA COO Yuichi Ishizuka was particularly proud of their latest release stating that “Regardless of skill level or budget, all photographers and videographers should have access to superb creative tools that enable them to capture not only beautiful images but images that tell the story of their lives.”

We look forward to Canon keeping their promise on that statement and hope a few new additions will follow from a similar ethos.
